Lecrae: Why I Left Columbia Records and What Every Aspiring Artist Needs to Hear
A few months back it was revealed that Lecrae left his major label Columbia Records after just two projects. His next project Restoration would be once again calling Reach Records it’s home.
One of the key reasons Lecrae left in the first place was he became too big for his label. There were too many resources required for him as an artist to be fair to everyone else. When he signed with Columbia, the Reach team was able to distribute their resources better.
However, one of the downsides of being on a major label is Lecrae couldn’t “move” when he wanted to move. He explained that some of the initiatives in the community, special song releases, and actions that he wanted to take part in, would have had to go through the label. He said he’s someone who just does things when he wants. Columbia would have made him play the waiting game or had him do things in a certain way.
Ultimately, he valued his extracurricular freedom, and Reach is doing well and in a place where the machine doesn’t have to devote all their time to him.
